During the 1921–22 school year the Athletic Committee held a contest that drew more than 80 suggestions (including skunk, bobcat, and hippopotamus).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eStudent John Thomason (Class of 1924) from Chilhowee, Missouri, proposed “Mules,” arguing that at least one Missouri team should honor the state’s famous mule-breeding heritage. The name was officially adopted and announced at convocation on \u003cstrong\u003eFebruary 15, 1922\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eWomen’s teams became the \u003cstrong\u003eJennies\u003c\/strong\u003e in 1974. UCM has long maintained live mule mascots (early ones included Gismo, Little Mo, and Roscoe; later Abbedale, Mancow\/Tammy, and Molly) in addition to the costumed mascot Mo the Mule.
