LSU's athletes have been known officially as "Tigers" since 1896.. The name "Tigers" seemed like a natural choice at the the time since most college teams were taking on the names of intimidating and ferocious animals, but the true story of LSU's athletic title is buried in Civil War history. The name was commonly used by Louisiana solders as far back as the Mexican War. But, during the Civil War, a military regiment known as the Louisiana Tigers "distinguished itself with its fighting spirit in the battle of the Shenandoah Valley, where it was said they 'fought like tigers."
