University of Central Missouri UCM MULE Desktop Sculpture

$ 229.00

ICON Artworks is proud to pay tribute to the beloved University of Central Missouri mascot with our officially licensed UCM MULE Desktop Sculpture!   A perfect gift for students, alumni, faculty, and fans alike!  GO MULES & JENNIES!

In 1919 the school (then Central Missouri State Teachers College) needed a new athletic nickname after “Normals” and “Teachers” no longer fit. During the 1921–22 school year the Athletic Committee held a contest that drew more than 80 suggestions (including skunk, bobcat, and hippopotamus).

Student John Thomason (Class of 1924) from Chilhowee, Missouri, proposed “Mules,” arguing that at least one Missouri team should honor the state’s famous mule-breeding heritage. The name was officially adopted and announced at convocation on February 15, 1922.

Women’s teams became the Jennies in 1974. UCM has long maintained live mule mascots (early ones included Gismo, Little Mo, and Roscoe; later Abbedale, Mancow/Tammy, and Molly) in addition to the costumed mascot Mo the Mule. The university adopted the mule decades before Missouri named it the official state animal in 1995.

        ICON Artworks Cast Pewter is handcrafted by our team of skilled artisans with an antique finish in the highest quality, lead-free Fine Pewter alloy used for sculpture.  Though not considered a "precious metal" like platinum, gold, and silver, pewter is a very valuable alloy used since the Bronze Age because of its lustrous silver finish, its malleability, durability and its ability to capture incredibly fine detail.   Pewter does not rust or deteriorate and can be enjoyed for generations.
